This refillable journal cover is reminiscent of the gilded book covers that you’d find on a dusty book shelf full of old hardbound books printed before the days of paperbacks. The outer cover is treated with dyes, paints, and stains that give the color and natural textures of the leather depth and richness, and finishes that preserve and protect the leather from moisture and other elements. With use and age, the cover will soften, change color, and develop more character, which will make it even more beautiful and timeless.

It is made with heavily tooled veg-tanned leather, in a fairly heavy weight for a book cover, 7-8 oz./sq. ft. It’s fully lined with 1.5 oz. pigskin. It has sewn-in retaining pockets with rolled edges in the lining to hold a journal or sketchbook in place.

Hand tooling around the border renders more depth and dimension than a machine embossed design would have. Seams are saddle stitched with heavy waxed nylon thread, heavier than what most sewing machines can handle. Saddle stitching is more resilient to wear and tear than a lock-stitch (the stitch produced by a sewing machine) because it will not unravel if the thread breaks or wears through in one spot. Stitched seams are recessed into a pressed groove in the leather which reduces the exposure of stitching to contact with other objects that can cause abrasion and wear on the stitches. The edges have been burnished and polished, not only to give them a nice finished appearance, but also to seal and strengthen them.

The stated dimensions refer to the size of journal, sketchbook, or notebook the cover is designed to fit. The cover comes with a 5″ x 7″ wire bound Canson Field Sketchbook with 160 sheets of art paper suitable for use with dry media and ink. It can be refilled with most any 5″ x 7″ or B6 sized journal, sketchbook, or notebook — be sure to check the outside dimensions of any book before purchasing a refill, as there is some variation between different brands. Note that new leather covers are usually pretty stiff when you first get them, so they may not want to lay flat so easily at first. But with use, they will soften and become more flexible.
